Self-Study Options

Suggested Self-Study Resources

The following are suggested learning options for self-study when County operations are closed due to an emergency event. This list is not meant to be exclusive – individuals and work units may have access to other resources, especially materials directly related to their field of expertise, which would be appropriate.

Safety Training

The Safety & Risk Management site currently contains 22 on-line Safety Training Modules available to the enterprise for self-study. These modules include basic information on the topic along with a quiz. Existing modules designed for team sessions are presently being converted into a self-study format to be downloaded.

Department or Job-Specific Continuing Education

o CEU’s to maintain license and certifications

o Study time to obtain various job-specific certifications (i.e., Administrative Specialist (IAAP) certification, building inspector license, etc.)

o Departmental training materials

o Review for job-specific exams

o Review of HR Procedures, Bargaining Contracts, COOP, Inter-local Agreements

o Internet research assignment

o Emergency Management Training – compliant Incident Command System (ICS) on-line courses through the National Incident Management System (NIMS) website

o Microsoft on-line training to learn and brush-up on computer software skills – click HERE to access these free tutorials

Organizational Development Resources

o Computer-based training (CBT) through SCG University – view over 1,700 titles available to employees for free. To register, please complete a CBT Request Formor you may contact AskTPM@scgov.net . **

o Various books, tapes, DVDs, CDs available through the OD Resource Library

o Enterprise Management Education Series (EMES): Planning Sequence – Participants are introduced to terminology and the “big picture” regarding business planning in Sarasota County Government

o Enterprise Management Education Series (EMES): HR Sequence – Consists of information and e-assessments to correspond with the seven half-day learning modules that are offered several times throughout the year.

o Guidance Resources , the County’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP), offers a variety of tools and resources to help resolve work-life concerns

Credit may be earned for using these options by completing a Self-Study Request for Credit form. After reviewing a book, tape, DVD, audio CD or other learning resource, just answer the three questions on the form and briefly discuss what you learned with your supervisor. Then forward the completed form to the OD office (interoffice mail or fax to 861-5762) or scan and e-mail to Kathy Byrd-Pobee at kbyrd@scgov.net to update your transcript.

** NOTE: Earning credit for CBT modules does not require this Self-Study Request for Credit form. Instead, follow the directions provided with the module.

OD Resource Library

Organizational Development (OD) has a collection of business books, CDs, audiotapes and videotapes available for employees to check out at their convenience. Credit may be earned for using these self-study options by completing a Self-Study Request for Credit form – click HERE to access this form. The OD Resource Library is currently housed on the 4th floor of 1660 Ringling in the OD area. You may view an inventory via the TPM website by clicking HERE and then receive or return materials via interoffice mail.

Custom Self-Study Packets

Organizational Development (OD) has developed some custom self-study packets designed to provide you with information specific to Sarasota County and allow you the convenience of learning at your own pace and on your own schedule. These are currently housed on the 4th floor of 1660 Ringling in the OD area.

The Fair Housing Act

This packet includes DVD of the January 2008 workshop with the Fair Housing Continuum that goes over the following objectives:

· A brief history of the Fair Housing Act

· Discussion of Sarasota County agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice

· Prohibited practices

· Fair housing for persons with disabilities

1. Who is considered disabled?

2. Reasonable accommodations

3. Reasonable modifications

· Avoiding liability

1. Policies, procedures, and standardization

2. Rights and responsibilities

3. What housing providers may lawfully do

The packet includes self-study instructions, a quiz, a 135-minute DVD, a PowerPoint handout for note taking, a certificate and a copy of the agreement that requires your signature.

Elder Sensitivity

This packet is designed to share information with employees to help identify possible opportunities for serving our customers more effectively. Specific objectives covered are:

· Increased awareness and understanding of some of the physical challenges that may be associated with aging.

· Identify ways we as SCG employees can better serve our elderly customers.

The packet includes a VHS tape, self-study instructions, and an interactive kit for hands-on experiences while viewing the video. Be prepared for a highly interactive and eye-opening experience!
